We are seeking volunteers to help with breakfast on Monday and lunch on Wednesday. We'll also need beverages to accompany the meals. The Sign-up also includes items for the Resource/Snack Wall in the Teacher's Lounge. Using this special occasion to stock the Teacher's Lounge will be greatly appreciated by the staff!
May 7-11 is Teacher Appreciation week, and we hope all the parents and students will take a moment or more to show your appreciation for all that PEWSI teachers do. To get you started, here's a theme for each day to provide ideas for personalized tokens of appreciation (that don’t necessarily require spending money).
Lunes del libro - Give your teacher a book she would enjoy or donate a book to your class library. The school’s Spring Book Fair starts that week-a great source of books.Ask the teacher if they have a wish list.
Martes del mensaje - Message of appreciation for your teacher. A template is available (see below). Of course, students can always do their own letter, card, etc
Mmm…miércoles - Munchies to make your teacher say, “Mmm!”
Jueves del jardín - Bring in a flower (real or handmade) to brighten your teacher’s day.
Viernes de vacaciones - Give your teacher something for summer vacation or draw what you think she should do! As an example, last year one parent gave her teacher a tumbler stuffed with a gift card, the teacher’s favorite lip balm, suntan lotion, drink mix, candy, etc.

The school has an account that the cafeteria draws from when students do not have money. Administration attempts to get the money back but are not always successful. "A donation to that account would be greatly appreciated," said PEW Principal Shawn Hintz. To donate, leave a check at the main office marked "lunch fund donation."

Join us for the First Chess Tournament at Phyllis E. Williams Elementary School!
CHESS can help your child (1) increase concentration, (2) encourage and promote pattern recognition and (3) enhance logical and deductive reasoning to solve problems.
Playing in a tournament allows your child to: (1) practice what s/he has learned in chess class, (2) learn time management, (3) learn some rules of a tournament and (4) win a medal or trophy.

Here's how the tournament will work:
Each student will play three rounds that are 20 minutes each. Winners of each round are decided by checkmate. If players are not able to reach checkmate by the time limit, the winner is decided by the point value of the pieces.
There will be two tournament divisions: 1) beginners and 2) advanced. A first, second and third place trophy will be awarded in each division and all players will receive a participation medal.
Finally, we will enjoy a Pizza Party to cap off a fun afternoon!

We will be revitalizing the outside learning space in the media center courtyard! This Friday (4/13), we need volunteers to weed, remove leaves, and do other prepping of the grounds for cultivating.
Leading up to Earth Week, we will begin building raised garden beds for edible plants, preparing tire planters, repairing butterfly garden planters, prepping for strawberry plants and fruit trees, repairing the musical garden, and repairing seating in the outdoor learning space. We also have a muralist who will be creating beautiful works of art on the outdoor walls inside the courtyard.
Mr Steve from Camp Shmidt will be delivering some building supplies and helping students build the raised garden beds on Wednesday (4/11). He will also bringing some loaner tools (shovels, rakes, etc).
Come join us this Friday for the groundbreaking of this exciting beautification project!

Friday's weather is supposed to be warm but not hot, so it should be a pleasant day to get outside!
Flyers will be distributed after Spring Break. Still planned for 7/9 - 7/19, Mon - Thur, 9-1. The cost will be $375 per student, which includes breakfast and lunch. No transportation nor before/after-care provided. There will be 15 spaces available per grade.
Thanks to Tiffany Hardy, mom to Lester, who donated clothes to keep at the school for children to wear. Sometimes kids have accidents and need a change of clothes quickly, so Mrs. Witt and Mrs. Claggett keep extras of all sizes in a closet in the office. Mrs. Hardy brought two bags of clothes! Administrators report that they still need boys’ uniform clothes, especially shirts.
Several parents have been working with school administration to work on plans to create a living library space for our students. The primary goals are to renovate the library space and create an outdoor classroom in the existing courtyard. The Living Library and Real School Gardens program are two beautification projects that will transform underused outdoor space into learning zones that provide students hands-on involvement while learning about science, ecological principles, STEM and literacy. The current project cohort team includes Principal Hintz, Vice Principal Quinones, Mrs. Fabito, Ms. Blackson, Delores Millhouse, Michelle Rose, Camille Jones and our community vendors.
PEW Administration has submitted an application to Real School Gardens for their Design and Build program. This program is for schools without gardens and finds funding partners and volunteers to help build outdoor classrooms. The Mid-Atlantic representative is diligently working to find a donor and stated that finding a donor can take some time. The Real School Gardens buildout will take place in the open space in the back of the school. Other PGCPS schools that have benefited from the program are Laurel Elementary and Beacon Heights Elementary.
We have worked closely with PEW administration to secure discounted or pro bono services to complete the first 2 phases of the Living Library project. The goal is to have a reveal ceremony on April 26, 2018 to include the PEW family, County and PGCPS administration.
